DEMAND ICC INVESTIGATE & CHARGE KENYA'S PRESIDENT WILLIAM RUTO FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

DEMAND ICC INVESTIGATE & CHARGE KENYA'S PRESIDENT WILLIAM RUTO FOR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY
The Issue
Brethren,
If the heading above bothers or jolts you, this petition is for you. Please hear us out, you could be the one who makes a difference and saves innocent lives. Only we can save us, we are the ones to initiate change before others step in to help. Evil triumphs when good people do nothing and we cannot be bystanders as innocent, weak, and vulnerable Kenyans face existential threats from their own leader, President William Samoei Ruto.
Most Recent update (Alfred Ojwang’s MURDER): For perspective, this is an update of a incident (one in thousands) to illustrate the atrocities perpetrated upon innocent Kenyans by the Ruto regime. On Friday June 6, 2025, eight (8) senior Kenya Police Officers were dispatched from the capital city Nairobi to Homa Bay county, 350 Kilometers away, to arrest 31-year-old Alfred Ojwang for supposedly posting defamatory information on the X (formerly Twitter) about Deputy Inspector Police Eliud Sang. Mr. Sang is Ruto’s henchman from his ethnic Kalenjin backyard strategically placed in the police service to safeguard Ruto’s hold on power and has been accused of leading Ruto’s secret police responsible for the murders, kidnappings, and disappearances of thousands of innocent Kenyans.
Anyhow, the Police accosted Alfred Ojwang at his parents’ home as he was preparing to eat lunch with his parents. They snatched him from his parents’ arms and drove him back 350 kilometers to Nairobi and MURDERED him. The National Police tried to explain away the murder by blaming the victim, claiming that he committed suicide. It also turns out he did NOT post the defamatory information that cost him his life, he was framed by an increasingly paranoid Ruto regime. Listening to his father’s heart wrenching rendition of his son’s fate and the murder so vile defies any sense of humanity,
Albert Ojwang's father speaks as autopsy reveals what killed his son in police custody.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident but the epitome of the atrocities that have been meted upon thousands of innocent unarmed Kenyans by Mr. Ruto's regime at his behest to silence dissent. We call upon all Kenyans to band together and rise to rescue Kenya from Ruto’s murderous grip. This we should do like our lives depend on it because they do. Kenyans are understandably apoplectic as this could be the grain that breaks the camel's back, change must happen NOW, Kenya protests erupt after activist Albert Ojwang dies in police custody
Kenya is a country that has known relative peace since independence with intermittent flashpoints of violence occasioned by electioneering, mainly presidential elections. In all the skirmishes that took root in 1992, the common denominator in virtually ALL the violence has been none other the current President Mr. William Samoei Ruto in one form or another, as an instigator, organizer, coordinator, commander, and implementor. There comes a time for accountability and for William Ruto, the time is past due, it is NOW.
Ruto’s bona fides as a brutal warlord span over a period of three decades since 1992 and he has left a trail of death and destruction in his wake for which he has never been held personally accountable. Consequently, he has been emboldened and left to his own devices, he will continue committing atrocities. To him, killing human beings is a sport that he deploys willy nilly, with stealth, experience, and state powers with precision and gets away with it. Again, he will not stop on his own volition, he MUST be stopped and held personally accountable. To that end, we call on the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to formally open an investigation of crimes against humanity in Kenya and Mr. Ruto’s role in those atrocities as president. It is important to note that Mr. Ruto has once before been charged with Crimes Against Humanity (murder, deportation or forcible transfer of population and persecution) at the ICC for his role in the 2007-2008 PEV of which witnesses against him were killed, disappeared, intimidated and interfered with, resulting in dismissal of charges without trial, Termination of Ruto and Sang case at the ICC: Witness tampering means impunity prevails over justice again. This is a call to action, to end bondage of millions of Kenyans to Ruto by standing up with thousands of murdered victims and their families in Kenya for justice for their loved ones. We ask all like-minded people of conscience to support this petition for the investigation, indictment and prosecution of Kenya’s President Mr. William Samoei Ruto for Crimes Against Humanity.
In Kenya today, there are no safeguards against the excesses of state police powers tightly wielded by Mr. Ruto. The once formidable Kenyan Parliament that checked the excesses of the Executive has been relegated to puppet and rubberstamp status. MPs and Senators are bought and paid for and are beholden to Mr. Ruto. Similarly, the once assertive opposition led by Mr. Raila Odinga is a shell of its old self, Mr. Odinga has been coopted to do Mr. Ruto’s bidding and has become complicit in the atrocities committed by Mr. Ruto. Simply put, Kenyans are on their own in this quest for justice and to end the looming annihilation of dissenters.
ICC Chief Prosecutor as Ruto’s lead defense Counsel – Right, wrong, or indifferent, most Kenyans believe that a major reason why their vulnerability is exacerbated in the wake of Ruto’s renewed human rights abuses with impunity is because they have no recourse against him because he (Ruto) is shielded from accountability by the ICC Chief Prosecutor, Mr. Karim A. Khan who was his defense lawyer at the ICC in 2007-2008 PEV charges against him (Ruto).
The sense of helplessness and hopelessness among Kenyans over Ruto’s impunity is reasonable and justified because he projects an uncommon aura invincibility that simply sends the signal to Kenyans that they have NO RECOURSE against him and that he can do as he pleases just as before; murder, kidnap, and disappear innocent Kenyans and get away with it.
Why it matters NOW
In 2007 Odinga, supported by Ruto, headed the opposition against incumbent Mwai Kibaki and when Kibaki was declared the winner, both men (Odinga and Ruto), in concert, declared a civil war, the 2007-2008 Post-Election Violence which resulted in at least 1133 deaths, 900 cases of sexual and gender-based violence, 663,921 displaced persons, numerous victims of grievous harm and destruction of property. As stated above, Ruto was charged at the ICC but charges against him were subsequently dismissed. 20 years later, Kenya is in eerily similar circumstances again; the campaigns for 2027 general elections in Kenya are already underway albeit prematurely, the only difference this time is that Ruto and Odinga are now in charge.
Just as they did in the lead to 2007 general elections, Mr. Ruto and Mr. Odinga have joined hands again to retain power. The country, already impaired by lawlessness, is precipitously and dangerously descending into anarchy, and many lives are at risk.
Ruto has staffed security apparatus with a disproportionate number of his tribesmen and tribeswomen in strategic supervision positions, they are the ones who oversee the perpetration of crimes in the guise of “national security”. The odds of fair investigations and adjudication of crimes are stacked against the victims, stated differently, the government of Kenya is designed in such a way that renders holding perpetrators accountable for the atrocities they commit overwhelmingly unlikely if not IMPOSSIBLE. They cannot investigate themselves, it is an exercise in futility, a fool’s errand. Ruto is emboldened because he believes nothing will be done about it, he appears to have immunized himself against any repercussions against him including by the International Criminal Court (ICC) whose Chief Prosecutor Mr. Karim Khan, was his defense lawyer in his (Ruto’s) first indictment of Crimes Against Humanity for his role in the 2007-2008 Post Election Violence (PEV). Kenyans need protection from Ruto's bondage and atrocities NOW, not later. We implore the International Community and the ICC not to look the other way but to play their prophylactic role of mitigating harm to innocent Kenyans by opening investigations into atrocities in Kenya and holding Mr. Ruto accountable for his role thereto as president.
Crimes against Humanity in Kenya under President William Ruto
Unlike 2007 when Ruto was in opposition when he perpetrated the PEV crimes, he is now President and since ascending to the Presidency in August of 2022, Mr. Ruto has presided over the most brutal regime in independent Kenya. His regime has initiated, advanced and carried out murders, kidnappings, and disappearances of unarmed, defenseless, and vulnerable Kenyans at an unprecedented scale. These victims’ crimes are merely engaging in lawful dissent to Mr. Ruto’s draconian government measures that have deprived them of their futures. Kenyans are sick and tired of institutionalized corruption that permeates government ministries and departments. It is a cancer that has metastasized in Kenya and has robbed Kenyans of once promising livelihoods and relegated them to penury, his poor governance has resulted in the near collapse of the economy, education, law and order, among others.
Led by Gen Zs, Kenyans have openly voiced their opposition to Ruto who in turn has responded by unleashing brutal force to quell their dissent. Thousands have lost their lives, many more have been abducted and remain unaccounted for, disappeared, and presumed dead. He has put the country on edge and teetering on collapse. In one of his moment of candor during a presser with the visiting Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Ruto slipped up in response to a reporter’s question and effectively admitted to his role in the atrocities when he proclaimed that all abducted civilians had been returned to their families and that he had ordered an end to the kidnappings, President Ruto says abductees have been 'returned to families' - The Standard. Unfortunately, that was not only FALSE that they had been returned to their families but also many others have been slaughtered, arguably on his orders as illustrated below.
2024 GEN Z Murders after US trip – Soon after returning to Kenya from the State visit to Washington DC, USA, Mr. Ruto encountered strong opposition to a new tax hike measure he was pushing in Parliament, the “2024 Finance Bill”.
The public, led by youthful Kenyans, the “Gen Zs”, went to the streets nationally protesting against Ruto’s tax hike agenda and he responded by unleashing the Police and the Military against them. The brute force unleashed against them included shootings with live bullets and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Kenyans, many more still missing, unaccounted for, and presumed dead. Bodies of some of those reported missing were found in forests, abandoned quarries, and mortuaries, showing signs of torture, with some mutilated and dismembered. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reported that hundreds of young Kenyans under the age of 35 died of gun shots to the head, back or other vital organs while many others were kidnapped and missing.
Multiple documentaries have attributed the murders to Ruto including the most recent by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC),
The extrajudicial killings became a globally recognized flashpoint that negated Kenya’s once stellar reputation as an oasis of peace and stability, Behind the Protests Mask in Kenya, Extrajudicial killings, Abductions and Court Sanctioned Militarization of the Freedom to Demonstrate. Ruto deflected the blame to distance himself and his role in the murderous rampage to others, Ruto paints Kenya as democracy while crushing Gen Z protests.
Kidnappings and Disappearances – Ruto has turned Kenya into the kidnapping capital of Africa. Spooked by the protests and waning public confidence in his leadership and the ensuing crackdown of the Gen Zs, Mr. Ruto followed it up with a sustained spate of abductions, disappearances, extrajudicial killings, unlawful detentions, among other atrocities against young Kenyans to permanently silence them, Kenya: Security Forces Abducted, Killed Protesters | Human Rights Watch. It is believed that he set up a Secret Police unit only answerable to him and a handful of aides. Many of the kidnapped are presumed dead but the public is too scared to speak up. A recent news article reported that mortuaries, especially the Nairobi City mortuary is, for the first time ever, at full capacity with unclaimed bodies, Drama as City Mortuary declines to receive unidentified bodies delivered by police. The kidnappings ignited widespread domestic and international uproar and whereas they appear to dissipate, they are very much alive, Accountability Gone Missing in Kenya. Mr. Ruto has become increasingly paranoid and mortally scared of dissent from any quarter and has ordered a crackdown on dissenting voices to silence them by way of kidnappings, arrest and prosecution on spurious trumped charges and planted evidence. The media is not spared either, recently, filmmakers who produced and released the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) documentary of the Gen Z murders mentioned above were arrested and face 10-year imprisonment, State links four filmmakers to BBC story, seeks 10-year jail term, Sh20m fine | Daily Nation. The world, including the United States, took notice of the atrocities and cautioned Ruto to stop the atrocities, Abductions must end! US joins calls for respect for rule of law in Kenya. Abductions must end! US joins calls for respect for rule of law in Kenya.
2007-2008 Post election violence in Kenya – This sad episode followed the disputed Presidential elections between incumbent President Mwai Kibaki and Mr. Raila Odinga. Both sides were accused of rigging election results in their strongholds. Mr. Ruto was a high-ranking lieutenant to Mr. Raila Odinga and after President Mwai Kibaki was announced the winner, both Odinga and Ruto retaliated by leading a tribal civil war i.e., Post Election Violence (PEV) that resulted in the killing and displacement of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, mainly of Kikuyu and Kisii ethnic groups living in Kenya’s Rift Valley. Ruto was the warlord overseeing and coordinating the ethnic cleansing by deploying the militia he controlled. One incident that caught the world’s attention was the burning alive of Kikuyu Christian women children, and men at KIAMBAA Church in Ruto’s hometown of Eldoret, 'We told them to come out of the church, but they locked the door ... So we burned them'
Mob Sets Kenya Church on Fire, Killing Dozens. Only after the United States, the United Nations, and other European nations intervened that the carnage stopped, by then damage was already done.
International Criminal Court (ICC) – Ruto was subsequently indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Crimes Against Humanity for the violence he orchestrated in the 2007-2008 Post Election Violence (PEV). He was not remanded to the ICC custody pending his trial, but instead he was roaming free, during which time virtually all the witnesses against him at the ICC were eliminated (killed/disappeared), Kenya 'ICC defence witness' in Ruto's trial killed and this How individuals linked to 2007/08 ICC cases died mysteriously; and Kenya: ICC Defendant Found Dead, among a plethora of others. There are multiple accounts detailing Ruto’s role in the PEV and the aftermath. He and his fellow indictee Uhuru Kenyatta closed ranks to show peace between the warring tribes, ran and won the presidency in 2013. It was all superficial, public charades and tomfoolery to beat the ICC charged and it worked for them. Their camaraderie did not last once in office as President and Deputy President.
