The Issue

For many Canadians suffering from diabetes, the cost of essential medications can be the difference between life and death. I am one of those individuals reliant on Ozempic, not only for my blood sugar and overall health but also to manage weight. Like countless others, I face the daily reality of struggling with the high costs associated with this medication.  With Canada having the highest inflation of grocery prices in the GDP and the insane cost of living in this country, like many others I often have to choose between getting my medication or paying my rent and buying food.

Despite its effectiveness, Ozempic is financially out of reach for many. When living with diabetes, the inability to access medications like Ozempic can lead to severe health complications, even resulting in premature death. Those like myself, who suffer from additional health challenges, including weight management, addiction issues, diabetes and much more, find Ozempic a lifeline that should NOT be accessible only to those who can afford it.

The Canadian healthcare system is grounded in principles of equity and access to care for all citizens. Yet, the incredible influence of pharmaceutical lobbies and corporate executives appears to stall critical decisions that could benefit countless lives. By approving Ozempic now as a generic drug, Health Canada can break away from such influences and finally take a decisive stand for affordable healthcare. To stop with the posturing in front of the cameras and actually DO something positive for Canadian citizens who NEED access to proper medical care. Our hospitals are failing. Our healthcare and frontline workers are struggling. And citizens are at risk of dying or seeing increased health concerns due to unnecessary delays. Stop putting corporations first.  This action will not only save lives but align with the values on which our healthcare system is built.

Other countries have already taken steps towards making essential medications more affordable by approving generic alternatives. Canada must follow suit, setting a precedent for transparency and prioritizing the health of its citizens over corporate profit.

We call on Health Canada to expedite the approval process for Ozempic as a generic, making it affordable and accessible to all who require it. Ensuring that life-saving medications are accessible should never be dictated by profit margins but by the genuine healthcare needs of citizens.

Please sign this petition to demand immediate action from Health Canada to approve Ozempic as a generic medication. Together, we can push for a future where health comes before profit, and every Canadian has the right to affordable medications.
