As residents of Cambridgeshire/Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, we have watched in distress as members of our community have been subject to controversy over fraudulent expense claims. The trust vested in them by the community was tarnished when they were part of the infamous 2009 expenses scandal. Shockingly, although their deeds were brought to light, they continue to sit in the House of Lords, a body supposed to embody the ethics of our democracy.

We now call on the government to thoroughly review the membership of all peers in the House of Lords involved in the expenses scandal between 2009 and the present date. Our democracy encourages transparency and accountability, and these compromised individuals threaten its sanctity.

A Telegraph report published in 2009 indicated several politicians abused their power and public funds, resulting in a nationwide scandal. With various cases across Britain, a precedent of injustice gets set that can potentially undermine the integrity of our democratic structures.

We demand a critical examination of these Lords’ continued membership. The outcome must ensure those involved in the scandal do not hold privileged positions in our democracy. The House of Lords' integrity needs immediate restoration.
