We embark on this heartfelt quest inspired by a deeply personal experience. My children, now teenagers, grew up without valuable financial support from their father. He chose to work "cash in hand," avoiding his responsibility to provide even the ordered minimum of £7 per week. Consequently, the Child Support Agency wrote off the £2400 he owed as 'historical debt' when our children were aged 8 and 10. This tale is not unfamiliar to many families across the country. 

We're not pleading for kindness, but for fairness. It's high time we reconsider the system of child maintenance in our country. Currently, it falls on the active parent to prove the other's income, a task they are ill-equipped to tackle. The Child Maintenance Service should bear this onus and periodically initiate investigations to enforce fair child support. The repercussions for non-compliant parents need to be substantial, deterring them from shirking their duties and responsibilities.
