Right now, thousands of children across Texas are heading into summer without access to the meals they rely on during the school year. And instead of helping them, Governor Greg Abbott just made things worse.

Abbott vetoed $60 million in funding for the Summer EBT program — a federally backed initiative that would have provided $120 in grocery benefits to families for every eligible child. That’s food on the table for children who would otherwise go hungry.

Twelve states are refusing this help. Texas is one of them.

In a state with some of the highest rates of child food insecurity in the nation, this decision is not about budgets or bureaucracy — it’s about priorities. And right now, the governor is choosing politics over kids.

We’re calling on Governor Abbott to immediately restore funding for the Summer EBT program and ensure that no child in Texas is left hungry just because school is out. The money is available. The infrastructure exists. All that’s missing is the political will.

Texas should never be a state where children suffer because of preventable hunger.
