Demand Genesee County Sheriff’s Department to Investigate Domestic Violence

Demand Genesee County Sheriff’s Department to Investigate Domestic Violence
The Issue
As a victim of domestic violence and cyberstalking, my plea is not just personal but serves as a voice for many who have faced similar ordeals. There is a dire need to reform how domestic violence and cyberstalking cases are handled by the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department in Michigan. It is necessary that these cases are thoroughly investigated and forwarded to the prosecutor, in accordance with Michigan law.
Domestic violence is a grave societal issue; every minute, approximately 20 individuals are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S., totaling more than 10 million victims annually (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence). An estimated 1.5 million people are victims of stalking each year with majority done electronically (Bureau of Justice Statistics). Yet, justice is often delayed or denied due to inadequacies in the current criminal justice process.
Among these inadequacies is a failure to abide by Crime Victims' Rights laws, ensuring those affected by these heinous acts are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect throughout the criminal justice process.
Additionally, law enforcement agencies must ensure appropriate authority transfer for cases when necessary. This aids in ensuring each case receives the attention it needs, and none fall through the cracks.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Department needs to guarantee appropriate measures are taken in response to domestic violence and cyberstalking, recognizing the seriousness of these crimes and their traumatic impact.
Sign this petition to demand Genesee Sheriff’s Department to improve their investigation and law enforcement procedures for domestic violence and cyberstalking.
