Demand For Transparency and Investigation into MTN Nigeria’s Data Depletion Practices
The Issue
In May 2026, I, Zaenab Olawunmi Adams Esq, a Nigerian lawyer and MTN subscriber, purchased 800GB one-year data plan from MTN Nigeria for ₦125,000. To my dismay, by August of the same year, MTN reported that my remaining data balance was only 91.45GB. This baffling data depletion meant that approximately 708.55GB of my data had been consumed within just 104 days.
I immediately questioned whether the reported consumption accurately reflected my actual usage, especially since my typical data usage patterns did not align with such rapid depletion. Seeking clarity and accountability, I reached out to MTN Nigeria for an explanation and requested full transparency regarding my data usage.
Upon making my concerns public, I found that I was not isolated in this experience. Numerous MTN Nigeria subscribers echoed similar grievances regarding unexplained and disproportionate depletion of their purchased mobile data. This issue has revealed a potentially widespread consumer protection failure, raising alarm and frustration among subscribers.
Nigerian consumers deserve transparency, accountability, and fairness, particularly when it involves significant financial commitments like long-term data plans. The unexplained depletion not only results in financial loss but also creates skepticism about MTN's billing integrity and customer commitment.
We are therefore calling on MTN Nigeria and the relevant regulatory authorities, particularly the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to urgently investigate these complaints. We request a comprehensive audit of data consumption records, improved communication about data usage, and the development of more reliable data monitoring systems accessible to consumers.
Restoring trust requires action and verification that MTN Nigeria is operating transparently and in good faith with its subscribers. Such measures are crucial to protect consumer rights and ensure we are only charged for what we genuinely consume.
By supporting this petition, you join us in demand for reliable data services and transparency from MTN Nigeria.
Sign now to urge MTN and the Nigerian authorities to take immediate action to resolve this matter.
