Demand for accountability of disastrous municipal services: Bromhof, Boskruin, Northwold
The Issue
The City Power infrastructure in this region is in a dire state of disrepair. Often residents - rate paying and municipal bill paying residents - are left without electricity and power for long periods, putting their businesses, security and perishables at risk.
The particular region of Bromhof, Boskruin and Northwold, where large portions fall under block 14 (but some sections are rotated without warning between block 8 and 14) suffer trips routinely after restoring from load shedding. In addition to this, even in the absence of load shedding, the area suffers inordinately high rates of outages and prolonged darkness. This is matched, almost as routinely, by water cuts that last hours.
The residents get nothing more than "escalating" from the council representatives and City Power clearly does not take seriously the maintenance and fixing of the network.
Short of calling for a boycott of paying municipal bills, residents are at their wit's end and demand to be taken seriously by the councilors, City Power and the Metro. We do not care if it is a multi-party coalition, or single-party led, but the Metro must start respecting rate-paying residents, while City Power is called upon to:
- Provide honest assessment of what is wrong with the infrastructure
- Accurate reasons for the incessant power cuts
- A plan of action of how and when the infrastructure will be fixed.
The residents of Bromhof, Boskruin and Northwold are largely rate-paying citizens, many of whom run small businesses being wrecked by the careless and apparent nonchalant attitude of all those with the ability and influence to effect real change. It is killing livelihoods and goodwill is now finished.
We will continue to lobby media and all interested parties until these concerns are addressed, including the likes of:
Local and regional media and any and all organisations that support the plight of law-abiding citizens being taken for granted by the City of Johannesburg and its council.
We demand answers now!
