Demand for a Sexual Offenders Registry in St. Lucia
The Issue
In St. Lucia, the tragedy of unchecked violence against women has reached a critical tipping point. Just recently, the island was shaken by the brutal rape and murder of a young working woman. Her children are now left without their mother, and the outcry for justice echoes through our communities. This is not an isolated incident, but part of a disturbing pattern of sexual crimes that routinely go unpunished. The lack of accountability endangers every woman and girl on this island.
In the face of such senseless acts, it is unacceptable that we continue without stronger measures to protect our citizens. It is imperative that the Government of St. Lucia enacts a sexual offenders registry—one that lists those convicted of sexual offenses against both females and males. Such a registry would serve not only as a deterrent but also as a tool for law enforcement and communities to protect potential victims.
According to a study by the Caribbean Development Bank, other Caricom islands have shown high rates of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the region, 1 in 3 women experience GBV in their lifetime. Despite these staggering statistics, many victims do not find justice.
Establishing a sexual offenders registry would be a significant step in addressing these crimes. It would ensure that offenders are formally listed, monitored, and cannot slip into anonymity after serving their sentences.
Countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada have implemented similar registries with success, allowing communities to be informed and better protected. St. Lucia must act now to join this global standard for safety and accountability.
We call upon the government to not only create this registry but also to ensure it is maintained with integrity and given the necessary resources for effective implementation. Alongside, we must have public education and support systems for survivors, to help rebuild their lives and restore faith in our justice system.
The time for action is now. Let us stand united, not only in memory of those we have lost or who have suffered a loss from these brutal acts, but in the determination to prevent future tragedies. Sign this petition to demand safety and justice for all St. Lucians.
