Demand Fairer DMV Hours, Scheduling, and Service Across North Carolina!

Demand Fairer DMV Hours, Scheduling, and Service Across North Carolina!
The Issue
Can we PLEASE talk about how broken the DMV system is in North Carolina right now?! I’ve been trying to make an appointment since December 2024 — and guess what? Still can’t get one. Every single DMV location across the entire state says "no appointments available." So today — on my day off — I decided to do what they suggest: Walk-in. (And this is where the madness begins...)
I got to the DMV a little before 11 AM. Mind you, walk-ins aren’t even accepted until Noon. The line was already wrapped around the building.
And what does “walk-in” even mean now? You stand outside just to scan a QR code on the door to get a number. When I finally scanned it, there were 237 people ahead of me. TWO. HUNDRED. THIRTY. SEVEN. And it’s already after 1 PM?! Make it make sense.
The DMV worker (who was already rude from the jump) barked at everyone: "Get your number and go sit in your car." So that's what I — and everyone else — did. Grabbed lunch. Sat in my car. Waited. Waited. Waited. HOURS went by. Around 4:30 PM, I got out my car thinking,
"Surely they’ll extend hours for those of us still waiting, right?"
NOPE. Instead, I was met by a rude front desk worker who basically said:
"We’re not taking any more people today. Try again tomorrow. Good luck." No apology. No help. No care. Just a dismissive "good luck," like our time means nothing.
Let me get this straight:
✅ You knew hours ago you wouldn’t be able to see everybody today.
✅ You made people sit around wasting an entire day anyway.
✅ And then you tell us to start all over like we were never there?
This system is absolutely broken. If they know they’re at capacity, cut off the line early — don’t leave people hanging for 5+ hours.
If they can't see you that day, your place in line should carry over to the next day, not start at zero. Their website should list accurate cutoff times and paperwork requirements — so people aren’t getting turned away after HOURS of waiting.
And while we’re at it — Why are we still not allowed to renew our licenses online easily in 2025?! I don’t care if I renewed online eight years ago — let me renew again. If they’re worried about vision or road signs, make us take a quick online quiz — NOT lose an entire day standing outside hoping to be seen. People cannot keep taking off work, wasting time, burning gas, and getting met with rudeness. We deserve better. Period. If you’ve been through this too — trust me, you are NOT alone.
We are calling for:
✅ Expanded DMV operating hours — including evenings and/or Saturdays at ALL locations.
✅ A real, efficient online renewal system — regardless of how many times you've renewed before.
✅ A fair digital line reservation system — where you pick up where you left off if you aren’t seen the same day.
✅ Increased staffing budgets and REAL customer service training — with accountability.
✅ Real-time online updates when DMV locations reach capacity — so citizens don’t waste their day.
We demand a DMV system that respects the time, dignity, and livelihoods of North Carolina citizens. Please sign this petition to urge:
Governor Josh Stein
The NC Division of Motor Vehicles
The NC Department of Transportation
to make IMMEDIATE and PERMANENT changes to fix the DMV experience across our state.
Citizens aren't asking for luxury. We’re asking for basic respect, fair access, and modern service — like we deserve.
