Demand Fair Pricing in Canadian Grocery Stores Now

The Issue

I am an average Canadian living in Vancouver, working tirelessly across three jobs just to make ends meet. In the face of the ongoing pandemic, it's glaringly obvious that food prices are surging, making it increasingly difficult to afford even basic groceries. On the one hand, we see grocery store giants like Loblaw's placing blame on every conceivable external factor, all while their pockets get greener with record-breaking profits. Meanwhile, many Canadians, myself included, are forced into making less nutritious food choices due to the increase in costs. This, unquestionably, is an unjust situation.

Reportedly, the cost of staple groceries such as vegetables, meats, and bread has climbed significantly since the start of the pandemic (Source: Statistics Canada, 2021). Simultaneously, Loblaw's declared a whopping 33% increase in earnings during the first quarter of 2020 (Source: Loblaw Companies Limited Quarterly Report). It reignites the issue that while large corporations are multiplying profits, average Canadians are struggling, inciting a stark disconnect that cannot be ignored.

The constant finger-pointing and underwhelming response by the government has left us, the consumers, in a distressing plight, all while food producers continue to overprice their products and grocery stores continue to ply us with false promises.  It has even forced many to resort to theft because they can't even afford to fulfill their basic human needs.  The question one must pose is ... who is the real thief here? Is it the desperate, poverty stricken Canadian who has had to resort to stealing a bag of potatoes to feed his family? Or is it the corporations who have doubled or even tripled the price of their products, all while cutting their staff and making positions that were previously paid, "volunteer" just so that their leaders and board members and shareholders are protected from any loss in profits, while at the same time lobbying government officials so they lose their backbone and refuse to do anything effective to help us average Canadian survive?

Let's unite as Canadians and raise our collective voices against these skyrocketing food prices. Let's urge our government to effectively intervene and level the playing field between big businesses and average Canadians. This petition seeks fair and equitable pricing in our grocery stores, relief from inflated food prices, and a justified provision for our food needs. Ensuring an affordable nutrition should not be a privilege; it should be a basic right.
