Demand Expanded Size Range in Cosplay Manufacturing and Retail
The Issue
As a plus-sized cosplayer, I understand the struggle of finding costumes that fit. Recently, I purchased a cosplay for $75 in the largest size available, an Asian 3xl. To my dismay, it didn't even fit half of my chest. The additional cost to resize it was $90 - an expense not incurred by my thinner counterparts. This is not just about me; this is about all plus-sized cosplayers who face similar challenges.
Cosplay is a beloved hobby for many people around the world, but its inclusivity has been lacking when it comes to size diversity. It's time we change that narrative and demand more from manufacturers and retailers alike.
About 42% of American adults are plus-sized, according to the Trust for America’s Health. This does not account for minors, who heavily contribute to the cosplay world. Yet most cosplay costumes are made with Asian sizing standards which run significantly smaller than US sizes.
We call upon cosplay manufacturers and selling websites, such as Uwowo Cosplay and Dokidoki Cosplay, to expand their size range to be more inclusive of all body types. Plus-sized cosplayers deserve equal access to affordable costumes without having to pay extra for resizing or independently made custom orders.
The spark that inspired me to start this petition is that, last night, I contacted Uwowo’s team to ask about the possibility of custom sizing, to which they turned down. I asked them why they have never accommodated for plus-sized individuals who want to buy bigger costumes. Their response took me off guard; they said that there was simply not enough demand for their manufacturers to take the risk of producing an item that they don’t know if people would buy. Something clicked in my brain right then. I can show them that we’re trying to enjoy the hobby, it’s only that we don’t have the means to do so. I immediately started writing.
