I have a personal concern linked to the graphic violence and brutality associated with Grand Theft Auto (GTA) games. Among many games, the GTA series has been noted for its realistic, albeit troubling, depictions of violence. As an open-world game, players are often incentivized to engage in brutal acts, including car chases, shootings, and violence towards civilians - actions sometimes bordering on the sadistic.

Take for instance its predecessor, GTA V, which included distressing scenes of torture. The game’s violence, realistic and graphic, is often criticized for pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable in popular entertainment. However, this is more than about pushing boundaries, it is about ensuring that such content does not fall into the wrong hands.

Despite all this, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) have traditionally rated GTA games as 'Mature' instead of 'Adults Only'. This allows these graphic games to be purchased by customers as young as 17. However, the effects of graphically violent video games on young minds is a concern. Research shows potential links between violent video games and increased aggression in players (APA, 2017). In case of GTA, these violent acts are not just portrayed, but also participated in - thus escalating concerns.

I, therefore, urge the ESRB to rate the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 as Adults Only (AO). This change will help raise awareness about the explicit content within the game, and serve as a safer guard by restricting its sale to minors. By doing so, we are taking a step forward in protecting our youth from access to such explicit content. Please sign this petition to join our cause.
