The Issue

In my years as a student at Clovis Unified School District (CUSD), I've seen a concerning disparity in how our school dress code is enforced. While boys often walk around campus with their pants hanging low, revealing their underwear, girls are routinely reprimanded for showing more than a modest amount of shoulder. It’s a disheartening reality that underscores a bigger issue—our dress code is not only outdated but also perpetuates misogyny.

The dress code, as it stands, places unequal restrictions on female students and dismisses opportunities to embrace identity. It sends a clear message that our abilities and achievements are secondary to our appearance. This is not just unfair, but harmful, and it hinders the creation of an equal educational environment.

The intention of a dress code should be to ensure a safe and distraction-free learning environment for all students. However, the current implementation disproportionately targets female students. This creates an environment where girls are taught—either implicitly or explicitly—that their bodies are a distraction or that they must cover up to conform to conventional standards. This not only limits our freedom of expression but also cultivates a sense of embarrassment and shame around our bodies.

Research and reports across the United States show that dress codes tend to target female students, often impeding their focus on education by subjecting them to constant scrutiny. According to a report by the National Women's Law Center, 80% of the enforcement of dress codes targets girls, which aligns closely with my observations within our school district. This discrepancy contributes to a learning environment that shames and diminishes girls instead of empowering them.

It is crucial for CUSD to adopt a more equitable and inclusive dress code policy. Several school districts have successfully implemented gender-neutral dress code policies that respect students’ rights to express themselves while fostering a distraction-free learning environment. Policies that equally address and regulate all students' attire, regardless of gender, provide a solid framework that could be adopted by our district as well.

By revamping our dress code, CUSD has an opportunity to support a more fair, inclusive, and diverse educational environment where all students are given equal chance to thrive without the fear of being unfairly targeted or judged.

I urge the CUSD school administration board to review and revise the current dress code policy to create one that aligns with values of equality and diversity. Let us come together to support a student body that respects each individual, regardless of gender or background, by signing this petition today.
