In a deeply disturbing incident in our community, a member of the Wausau Police Department used excessive force against a young girl (15 years old), causing serious physical injuries. A full-grown male officer broke open her lip and face, leaving her bleeding, bruised, and swollen. Shockingly, even after she was handcuffed, he continued to kneel on her back, creating a dangerous and unnecessary situation.

This is not an isolated case. Across the country, we have witnessed similar alarming incidents where police interactions have escalated into violence, particularly involving children, individuals with disabilities, and those in crisis. These situations highlight the urgent need for change in how our police officers are trained to handle such encounters.

Currently, many police departments, including Wausau's, lack comprehensive, mandatory training in de-escalation techniques and appropriate restraint methods. The absence of this vital training undermines public trust and puts both officers and community members at risk. We must ensure our police are equipped with the necessary skills to perform their duties safely and effectively.

We call upon the Wausau Police Department and the city officials to implement mandatory, comprehensive de-escalation and crisis intervention training for ALL police officers. This training should focus on strategies for redirecting and properly restraining without causing harm to adults, youth, individuals with disabilities, and those experiencing crises.

Furthermore, it is crucial that ongoing assessment and refinement of these training programs occur, with community oversight and transparency to ensure effectiveness and accountability.

By taking these steps, we can help prevent further incidents of excessive force and foster a safer, more trusting relationship between the Wausau Police Department and the community it serves.
