The Issue

I have always found that a pass is easier to manage. For many of us who work at temp job agencies, bus tickets are not just slips of paper, but critical tools allowing us to take transit to reach our worksites. The proposed discontinuation by Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) of paper tickets and passes can lead to significant inconveniences for us.

It is important to note that many individuals rely on these tangible tokens for their daily commutes, especially those who might not be tech-savvy or lack regular access to digital payment methods. Importantly, in times of server outages or technical glitches, paper tickets serve as a reliable backup, ensuring that our routines are not disrupted due to technology failures.

Roughly 87 million trips were taken on Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) buses and LRT in 2019 (source: City of Edmonton's 2019 Annual Report). If ETS discontinues the issuance of paper tickets as they have planned to do so by November 9th and no longer accepting them after December 9th, this decision will potentially impact the mobility of thousands of Edmontonians who depend on ETS for their daily commute. Arc is not reliable nor can it be counted on as a way for the less financially stable to be able to pay for their ETS trips.

Thus, we urge the ETS to reconsider this decision and ensure that paper tickets and passes remain an option for commuters. This is not just about convenience, but also about inclusivity and ensuring that everyone's transit needs are accommodated.
