Hundreds of residents of Ancaster gathered Thursday at the Ancaster Fair Grounds to make their feelings known at a Hamilton City Council public consultation on the Greenbelt land grab.
Over the course of more than three-and-a-half-hours residents, delegates, conservationists, MPP’s and First Nations leaders, made their feelings clear. No Greenbelt development. Not now, and not ever. One by one, speakers urged council to reject any further discussion with the Province’s negotiator and to hold off doing so, at least until the RCMP’s preliminary investigation into potentially criminal behaviour is completed.
Finally, Council Member Craig Cassar (Ancaster) raised a motion that would have council reverse their previous decision to engage in the talks. Cassar’s motion will be voted on later this month.
It was encouraging to see so many concerned residents coming together with activists and First Nations leadership to presented a united front against what all, including Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath, who also spoke, see as not only an affront to democracy and a betrayal of trust but one that may actually prove criminal in nature.
