The Issue

I am a concerned member of the Quba Center community in Sterling, VA, USA. I have raised issues about the lack of diversity and transparency within our non-profit 501c3 organization's board. Instead of addressing these concerns, I was met with blackmail and refusal to rectify the problems.

The current board lacks diverse representation which is crucial for an inclusive community like ours. A study by BoardSource found that nonprofit boards with diverse members are more likely to understand, represent, and respond effectively to community needs (BoardSource, 2017). We need a board that truly represents us.

Moreover, there have been instances suggesting conflicts of interest within the board. This not only undermines trust but also jeopardizes our organization's mission. According to a report by Independent Sector (2015), organizations with strong conflict-of-interest policies are more likely to enjoy public trust.

We demand immediate action from Quba Center management for greater diversity on its board and stricter measures against conflicts of interest. It is time we ensure our organization runs in the best interest of all community members.

Specifically, we demand:

  1. Remove Conflict of Interest:Make Quba Stronger by hiring another employee for Imam, Quran Program Director, or Executive Director (no budget is not an answer; financials and proposed services should be reviewed by independent party to determine budget/prioritization; community’s help should be solicited for salary, if deficit.)
  2. Make Board Functional & Diverse with Term Limits: Make Board composition from diverse ethnic backgrounds (many names have been suggested). Recurring more frequent board meetings with quorum and documented minutes / decisions. Abide by bylaws terms of 3 years by selection/nomination/election.
  3. Financial Audit of 2023: Due to absence of Treasurer from mid-2022 to end of 2023, no Board approved budget for 2023, conduct an independent audit for 2023 transactions.
  4. Dissolve ‘Quba Tours’ Entity: New revenue stream business and legal entity was created without Board approval.  This should be dissolved until proper board decision is obtained looking at new business model and risks.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fair representation and transparency within our beloved Quba Center.
