The Issue

When I learned that individuals reportedly marched through an El Paso neighborhood wearing Ku Klux Klan attire and shouting racial slurs, I was filled with outrage and disbelief. As a Black woman and mother, raising my children in El Paso, I cannot and will not tolerate racial intimidation dressed up as a Halloween prank. This is not a joke, and it is certainly not something to be taken lightly. The Ku Klux Klan's very existence is rooted in hatred, and its symbolism has terrorized Black Americans for generations, leaving scars in communities like ours.

In this particular incident, the individuals involved aimed to spread fear and perpetuate a history of racial hate. This cannot be brushed aside or excused under any circumstance. By walking our neighborhoods in KKK garb and using racial epithets, they crossed a line that demands legal accountability. The fear perpetuated by such actions is a form of racial terror, and it is the responsibility of our justice system to address it head-on.

The symbolism of the KKK carries with it a painful, well-documented history of terrorism, lynching, and discrimination against Black individuals across America. The mere presence of such imagery seeks to remind us of an ugly past and threatens the safety and unity of our community. Racial intimidation has no place in El Paso or anywhere in this nation.

We, as members of this community, deserve to feel safe in our own homes and neighborhoods. Therefore, I am urging El Paso's local authorities and law enforcement agencies to conduct a full investigation into this incident and file criminal charges for hate crimes against those responsible. The impact of their actions is not benign but is instead a clear attempt to incite fear based on race.

Hate crime enforcement is crucial in ensuring that no one in El Paso feels vulnerable based on their racial or ethnic background. Let us make it clear that El Paso stands against racial hatred in all its forms. Our community is stronger together, and it falls upon us to protect each other from threats that wish to divide us.

Join me in calling for justice and demanding that those responsible are held accountable for their abhorrent actions. Your signature can help send a powerful message that El Paso will not stand for hate and intimidation.
