Demand Councilman Jay Wegimont Resign After Assault Arrest

The Issue

On the night of Monday, June 9th, Councilman Jay Wegimont of South Kingstown stormed out of a Town Council meeting in the middle of a vote. Moments later, he assaulted Anthony D’Ellena, Chairman of the Narragansett Republican Party, in the hallway.

Wegimont physically assaulted D’Ellena, shouted in his face, and continued to follow him down the hallway and into a stairwell — all over a seven-month-old social media post that referenced Wegimont’s three prior DUI arrests, including a DUI settlement as recent as November 2024.

When D’Ellena began recording the encounter, Wegimont immediately changed his demeanor — stammering, putting his hands in his pockets, clearly realizing he had been caught.

The assault was witnessed by two individuals, Jessica Drew-Day and Jen Nerbonne. South Kingstown Police conducted a full investigation, and based on the evidence and eyewitness accounts, formally charged Councilman Wegimont with assault and battery.

This is not a one-time lapse in judgment — it's part of a clear pattern of reckless, violent, and dangerous behavior, including repeated drunk driving arrests right here in our own community. These actions show a man unfit for public office, who continues to endanger the people he's supposed to represent.

There is no excuse for political violence. This is about public safety, integrity, and basic accountability. Councilman Wegimont has lost the public’s trust and the moral authority to lead.

Sign this petition to demand Jay Wegimont resign immediately. South Kingstown deserves better.
