The Issue

Right now, trans youth across Michigan are being denied critical, evidence-based health care—not because it’s illegal, but because of political pressure.

On September 10, Corewell Health announced it would no longer provide puberty blockers or hormone therapy to transgender minors, citing a “serious risk of legal and regulatory action.” But gender-affirming care is still legal in Michigan. Corewell isn’t following the law—it’s following fear.

This decision comes just weeks after Michigan Medicine, the University of Michigan’s health system, made a similar move under pressure from the Trump administration. Trans youth are being targeted, not by science or safety concerns, but by political forces trying to intimidate hospitals into backing away from care that is supported by every major medical association in the U.S.

Families who relied on Corewell are now left with nowhere to turn. For some, this care was life-saving. Denying it sends a chilling message to trans youth: that their health and well-being are expendable.

We know better. And Michigan law protects better. As Attorney General Dana Nessel stated, denying medical services to people based on their gender identity may constitute illegal discrimination. Equality Michigan also warned that this pattern of withdrawal under political pressure is “devastating” for trans youth and their families.

Corewell says it will still offer mental health support to transgender minors. But affirming care is not just about therapy—it’s about autonomy, dignity, and medically necessary support that helps youth thrive.

We call on Corewell Health’s leadership—especially CEO Tina Freese Decker and the Corewell Board of Directors—to immediately reverse this decision and restore access to gender-affirming care for minors across all Corewell facilities in Michigan. Stand with the families who trusted you. Do what’s right, not what’s politically convenient.

Trans youth deserve care—not abandonment.

Sign this petition to demand Corewell Health restore gender-affirming care for minors and stand on the right side of medical ethics and Michigan law.
