Defund the 2022 World Cup

The Issue

More than 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar since the gulf state won the right to host the 2022 World Cup. Workers from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka migrated to Qatar via a work sponsorship program known as the kafala system. Under the kafala system, migrant workers are subjected to abusive conditions, brutally long hours, and devastatingly low pay. Migrant workers have also reported having their passports and other travel documents withheld by their employers, locking them in a sort of indentured servitude whereby they cannot quit and they have no means of returning home. Both FIFA and the Qatari government are aware of the abuse, but have refused to enact meaningful change.

According to its most recent financial report, FIFA’s annual revenue is approximately $4.6 billion. Qatar, the richest country in the world, is expected to spend upwards of $200 billion in infrastructure improvements related to the 2022 World Cup. However, the average monthly salary of migrant laborers working on the Khalifa Stadium is $220.

For the foregoing reasons, the World Cup Equity Campaign is asking for your help to "defund the cup." The following companies are partners of FIFA and/or sponsors of the 2022 World Cup:

Adidas
Budweiser
Coca-Cola
Hyundai
McDonald’s
Qatar Airways
Visa
Vivo
Wanda Group

Sign this petition to show your support for migrant workers in Qatar and demand the above companies (partners in death and co-sponsors of slavery) divest from FIFA and from the games. Signing the petition will automatically add your name to a letter to each company demanding their divestment.
