The Issue

As a student who prefers to test on paper because of my myopia, I view the current trend of digital-only testing as a gross abuse of power by the College Board. It feels like the institution is cutting corners, creating a punitive system whilst disguising it as progressive change. This isn't only distasteful to me, but it potentially hinders the success of countless students who find themselves at a disadvantage under digital testing, just like me.

This issue isn't a small one. Research by the National Institutes of Health ('The Influence of Computer Print on Cognitive Learnings') has shown that comprehension tends to be higher when reading from paper rather than a screen. This move completely dismisses the affinities, needs, and capabilities of an indeterminable section of students.

We are not advocating against digital exams but for the option to choose paper testing instead. This is a call for true inclusivity in education, which means providing students with the tools they need to succeed, even if it means offering more than one method of testing. We understand that digitalization is the future but let us reach that future equitably. We implore the College Board to provide paper testing options, for the sake of us, the myopic, the technologically challenged and students who simply perform better on paper. Every student deserves a fair chance. Please, sign this petition and let the College Board know that their recent direction towards digital-only testing is leaving too many students behind.
