Demand Closure of San Bernardino Schools Amid Dangerous Fires

The Issue

I write this petition as a deeply concerned member of the San Bernardino community. Our children and teachers being exposed to dangerous air pollution. Schools remain open despite the raging fires that not only endanger our beloved cities, but also jeopardize the health of students, teachers, and personnel. There are numerous reports of students vomiting, feeling lightheaded, complaining of chest pains, coughing up ash, and needing to leave school due to the harsh conditions. Our children cannot learn if their basic needs are not met. The palpable smoke and ash in the air are evidence enough that conditions are far from conductive to a learning environment.

Superintendent Arrellano and the school board's decision to keep schools open is baffling and inconsiderate of the people's welfare. We should not dismiss the fact that according to the Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to particle pollution from a fire can cause a range of serious health effects, including asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory symptoms.

Given these adversities we face, it is time to act rather than merely react. We implore Superintendent Arrellano and the school board members to prioritize the health and safety of our community - close the schools until the fires are under control and the air quality improves. Show that you truly care about students and staff. Sign this petition to demand the closure of San Bernardino schools amid these dangerous fires.
