Petition updateDemand Change for the Animals of Kansas City: Return Animal Control to the CityVictory for Kansas City’s Animals—Thank You for Making Your Voices Heard! But Our Work Is Not Done!

What an incredible moment for Kansas City’s animals and for everyone who has rallied behind them! On December 12, 2024, the City Council voted unanimously to give the Office of the City Manager 30 days to create a plan for bringing animal control services back under the city’s management—a major step forward in ensuring that neglected and abused animals finally receive the protection and care they deserve. Mayor Lucas even publicly voiced his support for the resolution, and then issued an apology for ignoring the warnings and concerns over moving animals control to Kansas City pet project in 2019.

This milestone is thanks to YOU—the passionate, dedicated advocates who signed the petition, contacted public officials, submitted testimony, and made your voices impossible to ignore. Your efforts culminated in a powerful show of support during the December 10 Neighborhood Planning and Development Committee meeting, where the committee voted to approve the resolution and move it to the full City Council.

You’ve shown that participation matters. Every signature, every email, every call, and every word spoken for those who cannot speak has brought us closer to real, lasting change. Kansas City's animals finally have a fighting chance because you stood up for them—and that is worth celebrating!

But the work isn’t over yet. Many council members have expressed ignorance or disinterest in this issue, and it’s crucial to keep the momentum going. Over the next 30 days, we need your voices louder than ever. Continue reaching out to your council representatives. Demand a robust animal services department that enforces ordinances, punishes abusers, and puts the welfare of animals first.

Together, we can ensure that Kansas City’s animal control services are not only restored to city management but reimagined to create a brighter future for every neglected, abused, and voiceless animal in our community.

Thank you for being the voice for those who cannot speak. Let’s keep this momentum going—because change is happening, and it’s because of you. Stay engaged, stay vocal, and let’s see this through to the finish line!

With Gratitude,

Becca
