Demand Basic Human Dignity in Government Layoffs

The Issue

Our government is not a tech company. Government employees are not disposable and the data in our system more important—they are people who have served our country, often for decades, with dedication and sacrifice. Many made far less than they would have if they had moved into industry.

Layoffs, when necessary, must be handled with dignity, respect, and transparency. Right now, that is not happening.

This petition calls for humane treatment of government workers facing layoffs. These individuals—many with families to support—deserve clear communication, reasonable transition periods, and respect for the relationships and institutional knowledge they have built. The way layoffs are handled today threatens the foundation of our democracy and our ability to implement future changes effectively. And most importantly, infect any future technology system that could potentially help America with ranker, sheer disrespect of the human condition and dignity, and do not weed out corruption in a manner conducive to those who are completely innocent of any corruption.

This petition demands:

- A fair, transparent process for layoffs.
- Respectful treatment of employees who have served their country.
- Fair recognition that people—not just data and systems—are the backbone of our democracy.
- Unlike private tech companies, where layoffs often prioritize protecting proprietary systems over employees, government workers maintain essential services that affect every American.
-These layoffs should not be sudden, chaotic, or dehumanizing. Budgeting decisions impact tax dollars over an entire year—not just a single moment—and must be handled responsibly.

Technology and progress can be beneficial, but they cannot come at the cost of basic human dignity. If we build the future on a foundation of fear and disrespect, we risk undermining both the social and technical systems that sustain and propel our democracy.

Sign this petition to demand that our government upholds its responsibility to its workers and treats them with the respect they deserve.
