Dr. Ali Sahebi, a psychologist and a William Glasser Institute Affiliate (in Iran) with over 340k followers on Instagram, has recently made claims in a video that not only undermine the dignity of the LGBTQ+ community but also potentially stigmatize them as people with a disorder (he categorized homosexuality as a self-destructing behavior along with substance abuse).

He claims that homosexuality is something that can be prevented if parents interact with love and kindness with their kids. His assertions are not only offensive but professionally irresponsible as well. The American Psychological Association has long recognized that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and does not require treatment (American Psychological Association, 1975). Moreover, his comments can have detrimental effects on the mental health of LGBTQ+ individuals who follow him or come across his content.

We demand that Dr. Ali Sahebi issue an apology for his homophobic claims disguised as Psychology and Choice Therapy immediately. Furthermore, we insist he takes down the offending video from his Instagram account to prevent further harm to those who might stumble upon it.

This is about more than just one video or one individual; it's about standing up against homophobia wherever we see it - especially when it comes from those in positions of influence like psychologists. Let us join hands in ensuring our society becomes more accepting and less discriminatory towards all its members regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
