Demand an Update from UOttawa on Fossil Fuel Divestment!
The Issue
In 2022 the University of Ottawa promised to divest form all direct equity fossil fuel holdings by 2023, and all indirect holdings by 2030. Its been over four years, and there is no public evidence that they have kept this promise.
This year, students at the University of Ottawa, in colaboraiton with the University of Ottawa Students Union (UOSU), the Sutainable Development Centre (SDC) and Climate Justice Climatique UOttawa (CJCUO), worked together to create the U of Oil Report mapping out the University of Ottawa's curent ties to the fossil fuel industry. Some key statisitics from the report include:
- 22.7 million in direct donation accepted from fossil fuel extractors, enablers and legitimate since 2024
- 243 + research articles published at uOttawa since 2004 connected to fossil-fuel-linked funders
- 21% of the Board of governors (7 out of 33 members) currently have or have had ties in the past to the fossil fuel industry
- 56% of Canadas Top 50 Fossil Fuel extractors, enablers and legitimators (per the Corporate Mapping Project) have a presence on uOttawa's campus
These are only the ties that are availiable through public records as the University of Ottawa does not publicly disclose all of its investment holdings!
We are asking the University of Ottawa to keep the promises they have already made. We demand:
- Full Transparency: a public, regularly updated database of all funding, gifts, and investment holdings.
- Full Fossil Fuel Dissociation: no more donations, research funding, sponsorships, or event partnerships form fossil fuel extractors, enablers or legitimators.
- Accountable Governance: conflict-of-interest disclosure and review for board of governors members.
- Redirected Investments: new partnerships with indigenous-led and clean energy organizations, not oil and gas.
The university signed the pledges, they set their own deadline, and they missed it, but they haven't told us why. We’re calling on the University of Ottawa to publicly disclose its divestment progress and provide a clear dated update on its 2022 divestment commitments.
