Demand stronger limits to residential Fireworks in Indiana and peace for our pets!
The Issue
As a resident in Indiana, my peaceful existence is routinely shattered from June 29 to July 9, and usually many days before and after in the name of celebrating one day, July 4. For 11 straight days, neighbors legally unleash a barrage of loud, frightening explosions that torment sweet, innocent dogs everywhere. I can prepare for one day of explosions by asking my vet for Trazadone, and I do. But this is not one day. There is no warning, and if you live by someone who starts randomly launching loud explosives on June 29 and continues through July 9, there is no way to estimate when, how many, and how long you'll be holding and trying to comfort your shaking, terrified pets. Innocent pets everywhere shake, run, and hide, sometimes with dangerous outcomes and with virtually no protection against the onslaught. My latest rescue, a Shih Tzu, plunges her entire head in her water bowl and drags it across the floor in an attempt to drown out the assault on her ears and senses. Allowing residents to set off daily explosions for 11 straight days is barbaric. It infringes on the rights of others to go about their days in relative peace.
On top of the animal, and by association, human distress, fireworks also come at a steep environmental cost, releasing harmful pollutants and litter into our environment.
As the 5th leading state in the USA for firework consumption, Indiana needs to make a serious commitment to its residents' peace, health, happiness, and to environmental protection. It's time to limit legalized residential fireworks to the day they were intended for, July 4. Residents who wish to celebrate the holiday with a fireworks show for friends and family a day or two prior to July 4 can apply for a permit and agree to the respectful practice of a set time period for setting them off, such as 6-9 PM, similar to professional shows.
