Saving your block or neighborhood is both a City and State issue. Zoning is a City issue but FAR (Floor Area Ratio) is controlled by the State through the Multiple Dwelling Law.

Assembly Member Linda B. Rosenthal and Senator Robert Jackson have a bill THIS SESSION which will clarify the original intent of the law. A "story" will be defined as 12' with ground floors being higher; mechanical space will be limited to 5% of a structure and the use of stilts and related terraces will be counted toward the allowed height. Developers will have the freedom to design as they wish (as determined by zoning) but the FREE SPACE will be limited.

How does this become a reality?
