Airline Refund Petition Update

We are now almost at 400 signatures. The goal is to achieve well into four figures before submitting the petition to Transport Minister Marc Garneau next week.

For those who did not receive my bulletin yesterday, this will confirm that anybody with a cancelled flight from a European airline is guaranteed a full refund. Many airlines are not providing this information, but steering passengers into accepting a future rebooking or travel voucher. So if you know of anybody to whom this is relevant, tell them not to accept these offers but to demand that the airline honour EU261 which clearly states that cancelled flights are eligible for full refund to the original form of payment.

Now we just have to get the Canadian government to legislate similar passenger rights. And if there is any doubt about the airline’s ability to issue cash refunds, consider this:

• Air Canada held almost $5.9 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short term investments at December 31, 2019.
• Their total 2019 cost for wages, salaries and benefits (second highest operating expense after fuel) was $3.2 billion.
