The Issue

Our neighborhoods in Fullerton, Buena Park, Anaheim, and surrounding North Orange County areas are being overrun by coyotes. These animals are no longer just passing through — they are living in our communities, hunting during daylight, and killing our beloved pets. Families are heartbroken; children and residents feel unsafe in their own backyards.

The presence of these wild animals poses a real and present danger. This is not just an inconvenience — it’s a growing danger that requires immediate, region-wide action from our elected leaders. It is heartbreaking to watch families lose their cherished pets, and it is equally distressing to feel a lack of safety in our loved ones' own backyards.

We understand that coyotes are a part of the natural ecosystem, but their population and habitat range have become dangerously unbalanced in urban settings. To address this issue, we propose a solution that is both humane and effective. We, the undersigned residents of North Orange County, call on the City Councils and Mayors to adopt and enforce a comprehensive coyote management plan that ensures the safety of both human and animal residents.

**Our proposed plan includes:**

**1. Capture & Neuter Program:** Implement a humane and scientifically vetted sterilization program to slow down the rapid population growth of coyotes. This non-lethal method can ensure a gradual reduction in their numbers over time, leading to fewer encounters with human residences.

**2. Relocation Program:** Establish a systematic method for safely capturing and relocating coyotes that are found in or near residential areas. Transfer them to suitable wilderness zones far away from homes where they can live without posing a threat to our neighborhoods.

Such measures have been successfully implemented in other regions, leading to safer community spaces and a balanced ecosystem. We call on our city leaders to prioritize this issue, coordinate with animal control experts, and allocate necessary resources to implement this plan effectively.

Sign this petition to urge our local authorities to step up and take swift action to safeguard our communities. Together, we can ensure a safe and harmonious environment for all residents.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’ve also recently received calls directly from constituents about coyotes, and will be following up with OC Animal Care to see what we can do to help alleviate this annual issue. Be well, Dr. Shana Charles (she/her) Mayor Pro Tem, Fullerton (District 3)
