The Issue

I am a fisherman and a volunteer at a swan rescue centre. Every day, I witness the devastating impact of sewage discharge on our rivers and wildlife. Our rivers are dying, our wildlife is suffering, and it's time to hold Thames Water accountable for their actions.

Thames Water has been discharging untreated sewage into our rivers. This not only pollutes the water but also poses serious threats to aquatic life and disrupts delicate ecosystems. According to the Environment Agency, in 2020 alone, water companies in England released untreated sewage into rivers over 400,000 times - an alarming statistic that cannot be ignored (source: The Guardian).

There has been at least 72 billion litres of sewage discharges since 2020!

Water companies are permitted to release sewage into rivers and seas under regulations dating back to 1997 and updated in 2009. The rules are intended to only allow sewage to be released during exceptional circumstances, such as heavy rain, to avoid it backing up into homes and businesses (source: The Telegraph)

We clearly need a change in law/legislation in order for this to stop and for the ministers and regulators to be held accountable!

This petition calls on regulatory bodies to enforce stricter regulations on Thames Water and similar companies regarding their waste disposal practices. We demand transparency about where and when sewage is being discharged into our waterways.

We cannot stand by while our natural resources are being destroyed. It's time we took action for ourselves, for future generations, and most importantly - for the wildlife that call these waters home.

Please sign this petition to hold Thames Water accountable for their damaging practices.
