Demand Accountability from Schools: Stop Hiding Video Evidence of School Violence
Every child deserves to feel safe at school. Every parent deserves the truth. And every school must be held accountable when violence occurs.
Schools are supposed to be places of education, growth, and protection. Yet when incidents of bullying, physical assault, harassment, or other forms of violence occur, families can face frustrating barriers when trying to obtain information about what happened.
In some cases, schools refuse to release surveillance footage, provide limited explanations, or cite privacy policies without clearly communicating what options are available to affected families.
Protecting student privacy should never become an excuse for avoiding accountability.
When a child is injured, threatened, or assaulted at school, parents and guardians deserve a fair, transparent process for understanding what happened and ensuring appropriate action is taken.
We recognize that schools have legal responsibilities to protect the privacy of all students, including those who appear in surveillance footage. However, these responsibilities should not prevent schools from preserving evidence, conducting thorough investigations, or providing lawful access to information.
We Demand the Following Changes:
1. Greater transparency following incidents of school violence
Schools must provide timely, accurate communication to parents and guardians when their children are involved in serious incidents of violence.
2. Fair access to surveillance footage
Parents and legal guardians should have a clear process to request access to footage involving their children, consistent with federal and state privacy laws. Where appropriate, schools should offer supervised viewing, redacted recordings, or other legally permitted alternatives.
3. Mandatory preservation of video evidence
Schools should be required to promptly preserve relevant surveillance footage when a violent incident is reported. Evidence must not be routinely deleted while an investigation, formal complaint, or lawful records request is pending.
4. Independent oversight and accountability
When families reasonably believe a school has mishandled an incident, withheld information improperly, or failed to investigate violence, they should have access to an independent review process.
5. Stronger protections for victims of bullying and violence
Students who report violence should receive appropriate support and protection from retaliation. Their safety and well-being must remain a priority throughout the investigation.
6. Clear written policies for families
Every school district should publicly explain its procedures for reporting violence, preserving evidence, requesting records, appealing denials, and filing complaints.
Why This Matters
Imagine sending your child to school believing they will be safe, only to receive a phone call saying they were hurt.
You ask what happened.
You ask whether cameras recorded the incident.
You ask to see the evidence.
And instead of receiving clear answers, you encounter delays, confusing policies, or outright refusals without meaningful explanation.
Families should not have to fight endlessly for transparency after their child has experienced violence.
This petition is not about publicly exposing children or violating student privacy. It is about ensuring that privacy laws are applied responsibly and that schools cannot use vague explanations to escape legitimate scrutiny.
Our Call to Action
We urge school boards, district superintendents, state education departments, and lawmakers across the United States to establish stronger, enforceable standards for transparency, evidence preservation, and accountability following incidents of school violence.
A school's responsibility does not end when violence occurs. That is when its responsibility to protect students and communicate with families becomes even more important.
We are calling for a system where victims are supported, evidence is preserved, investigations are fair, and families have meaningful ways to seek answers.
Children deserve safety. Parents deserve transparency. Schools must be accountable.
