Demand accountability from Meliá Hotels International!

The Issue

Animals need help right away! Meliá Hotels International has been exposed as a major hospitality group failing to show adequate progress on their cage-free egg promises. Add your name and let them know guests care about animals and food safety. It’s time they admit the truth about where their eggs come from.

In 2020 Meliá pledged to ban the use of cruel cages in their global supply chains by 2025 but have now pushed that deadline to 2026 and are claiming that their original policy excluded brands franchised and managed. Meliá is only reporting cage-free percentages for a few countries and not its entire global portfolio and this is unacceptable. This lack of accountability and failure to uphold their original promise shows a global inequity and betrayal of its guests' trust to end the abuse of hens.

Cages are far from luxury for hens. Cages are so small, and packed with birds, that the hens can’t move or spread their wings. Often, their body parts are caught in the caging, resulting in fractured or broken bones, deformities, and severe feather loss. Some hens, exhausted or unable to move, are trampled to death by their confined cage mates. These cages are not only cruel to animals, but they also pose a serious food safety risk to consumers. Hens in these cages are forced to live, breathe, and lay eggs for human consumption while trapped amongst feces and rotting bodies. Eggs from caged hens are up to 25 times more likely to contain salmonella.

This hospitality group knows all about the cruel, dangerous conditions of cages and promised their consumers that they would put an end to this animal abuse. So why haven’t they publicly published any meaningful global progress on ending cages throughout their supply chains? What are they hiding from their guests?

Hundreds of companies around the world are ditching cages and have the reports to prove it. It is unacceptable that Meliá refuses to be transparent about their global progress! Did they deceive customers in order to continue profiting off of the cruelty they said they would end?

Demand answers and accountability by joining us in signing this petition so that we can tell this untrustworthy hospitality group to stop falling behind their competitors, and start reporting global cage-free progress!
