Demand Accountability for CRA's Unfair and Islamophobic Audits

The Issue

As a Muslim, I am deeply concerned about the unfair targeting of my culture and religion by the Review and Analysis Division (RAD) of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The recent court case ruling confirmed that the CRA's audits and investigations of various Muslim charities were indeed Islamophobic. Yet, disappointingly, it failed to provide a resolution or impose any consequences on the CRA for their unjust actions.

In 2015, only 0.47% of all charities in Canada were Muslim-led, but between 2008 and 2015, 75% of all charities revoked by RAD were Muslim-led charities. This situation is not only personal to me but also affects thousands of Muslims across Canada who contribute to these charities. According to Statistics Canada, there are over 1 million Muslims in Canada, making up about 3.2% of the nation's total population (Statistics Canada, 2011 National Household Survey). These individuals trust these charities with their donations and expect them to be treated fairly under Canadian law.

Government institutions such as the CRA should serve the people, not attack them, and the RAD should protect civilians from hostility, not be hostile towards them. These unfair audits are the after-effects of an Islamophobic government whose actions are built upon unfair and outdated stereotypes.

The lack of consequences for such discriminatory practices sets a dangerous precedent that undermines our faith in Canadian institutions. It is crucial that we demand accountability from the CRA and insist on fair treatment for all religious organizations irrespective of their faith.
