Demand access to Term 4 exam scripts for students.
The Issue
As grade 8-11 students who dedicate countless hours preparing for our Term 4 exams, I find it disheartening to receive my report card and encounter unexpected marks without being given any opportunity to understand why. This isn't merely about a single grade; every mark is crucial, especially when striving for top positions. However, the current rules deny me and many others the basic right to see our marked exam scripts, leaving us puzzled without avenues for improvement.
This petition is not an attack on our local school principals, who tirelessly work to support our education. Instead, it is a call to action directed at the Department of Education to implement a vital policy change that allows students to view their own marked Term 4 exam papers. We are not asking to remove the exam scripts from the school premises. Even a brief, one-hour supervised review session, just for those who would like to, would completely solve this problem.
The ability to see our marked exams is essential for a complete educational experience. Without it, students are left in the dark, unable to identify mistakes or verify if marking errors have occurred. This lack of transparency not only hinders our learning but also impacts our academic integrity and future opportunities.
Some private schools already have policies in place that permit students to review their exam scripts, ensuring fairness and fostering a culture of open learning. Research shows that students who receive feedback on their work perform significantly better and are more likely to excel in future assessments (Black & Wiliam, 1998). Why should students in our region be excluded from these benefits?
Viewing marked exam scripts allows students to:
1. Pinpoint areas for improvement, thereby enhancing their knowledge and skills.
2. Understand marking patterns and ensure accuracy in grading.
3. Develop critical reflection abilities vital for lifelong learning.
The denial of access to marked scripts is a barrier to true educational growth. By granting students this access, we encourage a more transparent, equitable, and supportive academic environment where students are truly equipped to learn from their mistakes.
I urge you to stand with me and advocate for this crucial policy change by signing this petition. Let's pave the way for a more transparent and beneficial educational experience for all students.
