The Issue

I am a mother and grandmother living in Alberta, and my only source of income is CPP disability. With just $700 per month and able to earn only $7100 annually before taxes, it's near impossible to maintain a roof over my head. This situation is not unique to me; it’s a growing crisis affecting countless Albertans. The exorbitant rent prices in Alberta have become a pressing issue, pushing many families to the brink of homelessness.

Average rental prices for a modest 2-3 bedroom home or apartment range from $2300 to $4000 monthly, while even a single room costs between $1200 and $1350. When you add utilities to these costs, affording a home becomes a stretch few can manage. With such high costs, the basic right to shelter seems more like a luxury than a necessity.

Homelessness rates have soared in Alberta because of these unmanageable rental prices. It's disheartening to see hardworking individuals and families struggling to make ends meet, forced to choose between basic needs and shelter. This isn't just a statistic; it's a heartbreaking reality facing our community.

Immediate action is needed. Implementing a rental cap could offer much-needed relief to residents, stabilizing rent prices and providing security for families and individuals alike. By capping rental fees, Alberta can ensure that no one has to face homelessness due to unaffordable housing.

This petition demands that the Alberta government introduces regulations to cap rental prices, ensuring affordable housing for everyone. Such measures have been successful in other regions and can be tailored to reflect Alberta's unique economic conditions.

Please join me in calling on our leaders to take this necessary action. Sign this petition to help make housing affordable for all Albertans. This is the first step towards creating a more equitable and supportive community.
