As someone with loved ones & friends who are pensioners, I recognize the importance of the winter fuel payment scheme in our society. This proposal by parliament was never included in Labour's manifesto. It was an institution-driven decision, rather than the voice of the people. An estimated 12 million older adults receive the winter fuel payment, helping them manage their heating costs and ensure their comfort during the coldest months (source: Age UK). The absence of direct democracy with regards to this essential service is a troubling issue for many citizens, hence, our demand for a referendum. It is essential to ensure that the choices that affect our valued senior community are dictated not just by the establishment, but by the wider populace. We request a parliamentary consideration to give us, the people, a say on the Winter Fuel Payment through a referendum.
