Demand a hearing for bill S.1965 to protect vulnerable youth
The Issue
Growing up in an environment marked by parental abandonment and a complete lack of protection is a reality that no child should have to endure. From a young age, like many others, I did not receive the basic care, stability, or emotional support that a child needs. My parents failed to provide a safe home, leaving me exposed to constant neglect and emotional insecurity. Without a responsible adult to protect me, I became vulnerable to various forms of harm, including sexual abuse by a family member. This traumatic experience occurred at a time when I was most in need of safety and nurturing.
Countless youth across the nation face similar, distressing circumstances, and it is imperative that we take immediate action to protect them. Bill S.1965 aims to provide more Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) visas for young people who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. This bill is crucial in offering a pathway to safety and stability for youth like me who have endured unimaginable hardships.
The current caps on SIJS visas limit opportunities for vulnerable youth to find freedom and security in the United States. According to recent data, hundreds of qualified youth applicants are left in legal limbo every year due to these restrictions. By ensuring an adequate number of SIJS visas, we can offer hope and a new beginning to those who need it most.
We urgently need Bill S.1965 to receive a hearing in Congress. A hearing is the first step towards passing this critical legislation that promises to change lives. It will allow lawmakers to understand the urgent needs of SIJS youth, review the benefits of increasing visa numbers, and hear firsthand stories of resilience and determination.
I am calling on you to join me in advocating for these vulnerable youth. Let's show Congress that there is overwhelming public support for Bill S.1965 and the vital changes it proposes. By signing this petition, you are not only supporting a bill, but you are standing with every young person whose story mirrors my own—a story of survival against the odds.
We need more SIJS visas. We need freedom. We need your signature. Please sign this petition and help us make a difference.
