The Issue

Steven Barrier Jr., a 23-year-old Black man, tragically lost his life in the custody of Stamford Police Department on his birthday, October 23rd, 2019. For Steven's mother, this petition is a plea for justice and accountability, and a cry for reform in our local communities. On the night of Stevens passing, his mother called for assistance. Instead of receiving help, his family was met with ridicule, mockery, neglect, and abuse. Not only was the police department responsible, but so were Stamford Fire Department, EMS, Stamford Hospital, the Medical Examiner, and the Funeral home.

Nationally, Black people are 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police than their white counterparts (source: National Academy of Sciences). Steven's life mattered and he deserved better. We need a special prosecutor to give Steven a chance at the justice he deserves by reopening the case and impartially reviewing it.

This is not just about Steven but about systemic racial injustice and the abuse of power which have been long-standing problems in our country. It's about a mother who lost her child, a community who lost a young man, and a society in need of significant change.

Steven's case should be a model for transparency, accountability, and change. We demand the City of Stamford assign a special prosecutor to this case, hold the parties responsible for Steven’s death accountable, and ensure a fair trial. Let’s prevent further tragedies by committing to transparency, genuine communication and reform in our law enforcement agencies. Please sign the petition to help bring justice for Steven Barrier Jr. and to promote justice and fairness in our society.
