Demand a Fair Media Standards Act

The Issue

As a parent, I have two children who are growing up in a world where media influence is far-reaching and impactful. I want them to inherit a society where truth, integrity, and accountability are at the core of our media landscape. Unfortunately, the reality today is that media outlets often present biased information, contributing to partisanship and division rather than promoting common ground in politics.

The need for a Fair Media Standards Act is more crucial than ever. In 1987 the Fairness Doctrine was repealed and we have only seen worse partisanship (1). New legislation would ensure that media organizations adhere to unbiased reporting, fact-checking, and a clear separation of news and opinion. Media plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and the political climate, and it is time to hold it to higher standards.

According to a study by Gallup, (2), only 30% of Americans trust news sources where 36% have not trust in them at all, this has been a sharp decline since 1976 where trust in media was around 70%. This shows a loss of trust that we must address for the future of democracy.

A Fair Media Standards Act would include requirements for transparent funding disclosure, an independent oversight body to review complaints, and penalties for consistently publishing false or misleading information. This act would not only serve as a safeguard against misinformation but would also foster a media landscape where dialogue and diverse perspectives are encouraged.

The Fair Media Standards Act (FMSA) is a solution:

 • Transparency: Major media must reveal ownership, funding, and algorithms.

 • Diverse Perspectives: Users get access to credible viewpoints on important issues.

 • Fact Accountability: An independent board flags misinformation and ensures corrections.

 • Civic Journalism: Incentives for nonpartisan and investigative reporting.

 • News vs. Opinion: Clear labeling so viewers know what’s commentary.

We need a media system that informs, not manipulates.

By supporting this petition, you are advocating for a media environment where our children can grow up receiving accurate information, free from the extreme partisanship that currently permeates political discourse. Together, we can push for fair, transparent, and accountable media standards for the benefit of future generations.

Please sign this petition to ensure that our media reflects and respects the fairness we wish to see in the world. Help us pave the way for a more united, informed, and civil society.
