As a student in the beaverton school district, I am increasingly aware of the growing role of technology in our education system. Recently, I've observed teachers using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to streamline grading processes. While I understand the need to leverage technology for efficiency, it seems unfair that the same tool is not equally accessible to us, the students, as a learning aid.

Currently, AI tools are used by many teachers to automate grading, feedback, and even creating learning materials. It’s clear that AI is recognized for its potential to enhance educational outcomes and reduce teacher workload. However, students often face restrictions in using AI tools for learning purposes. There's a notable inconsistency in its application, as it is seen as an advantage for educators but a prohibited tool for students.

It is essential to foster an environment where students have the same access to technology as educators, promoting fairness and innovation. Many AI tools can assist students in understanding complex topics, managing their workloads, and developing new skills. Moreover, familiarizing students with AI will prepare them for future careers in a world where AI is becoming increasingly common across various industries.

The establishment of a transparent and equitable AI policy within our school district would ensure that both teachers and students can benefit from AI responsibly and ethically. Such a policy could outline how AI can be used to support teaching and learning, training provisions for both teachers and students regarding AI tools, and guidelines to prevent misuse or over-reliance on AI.
