On Friday morning, October 18, eighteen-year-old Jaedynn Anthony, while earning an honest living during her overnight shift at 7-Eleven at Wilshire & Council in Oklahoma City, was callously murdered. Jaedynn left behind a baby and a family that deeply mourns her loss. This heart-wrenching incident is not isolated; several other lives have been tragically lost in similar circumstances, yet 7-Eleven refuses to make changes for the safety of its employees, putting profit above people.

It has been argued repeatedly that having two clerks or a security guard present during these overnight shifts can dramatically reduce the risk of such events repeating. Still, the demands fall on deaf ears. It is vital for us to align our voices and demand the implementation of proactive measures by 7-Eleven in protecting their employees.

Approximately 1 in 4 property crimes, including burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft, occur in parking lots or garages, common spaces at 7-Eleven stores which are often deserted during overnight shifts (National Crime Victimization Survey, Bureau of Justice Statistics). The presence of more staff or a security guard is an effective deterrent, and this small shift can profoundly enhance safety measures.

Time and again, several multinational retail conglomerates have showcased that they value their profits more than the lives of their employees, and it is time this changes.
