Hello all,
You may have heard that Andy Burnham wants to run for the next election with electoral reform on the Labour Party manifesto.
"So everyone's vote counts, and everyone's voice is heard."
Well, that's not going to happen, as PR ignores those without representation, those who vote for the least bad option, and those who want to raise or focus on specific issues that are ignored.
Political parties will also struggle to govern, as they will need fringe party support to get anything through. Great.
The way the VETO option works in PR is simple in its principle and powerful in its effect.
The percentage of vetoes leads to the same percentage of empty seats.
This retains the proportionality of PR but reins in political parties so they can only increase seats by serving more voters and puts those in power on notice that if they don't properly represent voters' best interests, even more seats will become empty.
We explain it in more detail here.
Now is the time to put the veto option on the map.
I checked parliamentary petitions, and there are two "None of the Above" petitions in play. One expires on 18 November. That is D-day. The other is in January next year.
I'm using the Change.org petition to build up a signature bank.
So, please sign the parliamentary petition in November and share it as widely as possible. I will send an update at that time.
If we can get over 10,000 signatures on a parliamentary petition on such a dry topic, it will get noticed; if we can get to 20,000 and beyond, I think media attention is guaranteed.
PR is only on the table as it suits political party best interests, as usual voters come second, if at all.
Just wanted to let you all know what is being planned.
Please keep November in mind; you might want to add it to your calendar. We might still be rejected because of the 2nd NOTA petition, but the simple principles of majority will and individual rights must be at the centre of every government.
Nothing else can reliably maximise the common good.
Thank you, everyone, for your signatures. A special thanks to those who chipped in; we really appreciate it.
Regards,
Rohin
