Delay school for Fairfax County on icy and very cold days
The Issue
As a concerned member of the Fairfax County community, I am urging the Fairfax County Public Schools to consider delaying the start of the school day during hazardous weather conditions, particularly when icy sidewalks and extremely low temperatures pose significant dangers to our students. The recent weather conditions in Fairfax County, where temperatures plummeted to single-digit degrees with perilous wind chills, highlighted the urgent need for this change.
Students face numerous risks when heading to school in such harsh conditions. Icy sidewalks become treacherous paths, greatly increasing the possibility of students slipping and sustaining injuries on their way to schools and bus stops. Further, when students have to brave the cold while waiting at bus stops or walking to school, their chances of getting sick with illnesses such as the common cold and flu go up significantly. Moreover, the potential for black ice on the roads is a hazard not only for student drivers but also for all motorists.
The safety of our children should be our utmost priority. In inclement weather, especially when visibility is poor in the dark early morning hours, the potential for accidents and injuries escalates. Delaying the start of school during these conditions would mitigate these risks significantly, helping to ensure that our students arrive at school safely and can focus on learning rather than their personal safety.
Beyond safety concerns, delays could help prevent increased rates of tardiness and absences that typically spike in poor weather conditions. Students and families would face less stress and disruption knowing that extra time is provided to navigate the precarious conditions safely.
I urge the Fairfax County Public Schools to adopt a policy of delaying the start of school when icy sidewalks and low temperatures pose clear risks. This pragmatic step can make a critical difference in protecting the wellbeing and education of Fairfax County’s students.
