Defund the Montreal Police Department

The Issue

Growing up in Montreal, I've witnessed firsthand the heavy-handed presence of the local police. With every police cruiser that drives by, I'm reminded of the oppressive systems at work within our city that seem to perpetuate rather than alleviate societal issues. The Montreal police have often shown racial biases in their operations, and it's time we address this critical issue head-on.

In recent years, there have been numerous accounts and studies that highlight racial profiling and misconduct by the police in Montreal. A famous report by the Montreal Centre for Research-Action on Race Relations unveiled that Black and Indigenous people are disproportionately targeted by police actions. With statistics showing they are more frequently stopped by police, we must recognize this systemic issue as a call for urgent change.

The financial resources currently allocated to the Montreal police department could be far more effectively used to support underfunded community programs. Many neighborhoods in Montreal are crying out for more mental health services, community centers, and affordable housing. Redirecting funds from the police budget to these areas will not only improve the quality of life for all Montrealers but also assist in addressing the root causes of crime more effectively than aggressive policing ever could.

It's time to rethink our priorities and invest in community-led safety initiatives. By defunding the police, we open up the opportunity to reallocate those resources towards building a more equitable, just, and supportive society for everyone, regardless of their race or socio-economic status.

We urge Montreal city officials to take actionable steps in reducing the police budget and reinvesting in our community's future. Only by doing so can we ensure a healthy, safe, and fair environment for all residents.

Please sign this petition to make our voices heard and push for a safer, more equitable Montreal.

Cops are leeches and class traitors, they are not needed by the people and only exist to maintain the rich's power, fight back, they cant kill all of us
