As a combat veteran who proudly served my country to uphold the Constitution and protect the freedoms it promises to all citizens, I am deeply troubled by the unchecked powers of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). These agencies, designed to protect us, have morphed into entities that, in many instances, compromise the rights and liberties enshrined in our Constitution.

Disturbing reports and high-profile cases illustrate the overreach of these agencies, with numerous documented instances of human rights violations, unconstitutional detentions, and family separations. According to a 2020 report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), ICE and DHS have been involved in thousands of cases of abuse against immigrants, many of whom were legally seeking asylum. This trend not only undermines our legal system but also erodes the national sense of justice and humanity.

The financial burden of supporting these agencies is staggering. In 2021, the combined budget of ICE and DHS exceeded $88 billion, with much of this funding allocated towards enforcement activities that have shown little regard for constitutional safeguards. These funds could be better spent on programs that promote community safety, mental health, and local law enforcement initiatives that genuinely protect American lives without compromising fundamental rights.

I propose a realignment of national priorities by defunding ICE and DHS, redirecting resources towards more accountable and community-focused safety measures. This change will not only protect our rights but will also ensure that America remains a beacon of hope and liberty. The protection of constitutional rights should never be sacrificed under the guise of national security.
