We, the undersigned, are Union County and North Carolina residents, who are urgently calling on the Union County Board of Education to immediately issue clear guidelines to our district administrators and teachers to not collaborate with potential ICE activity on school grounds. 

Under Trump’s first month in office, over 8,000 immigrants have been arrested, and over 37,000 people have been deported. This represents an aggressive and destructive assault on the immigrant community, including here in North Carolina. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) rescinded the existing policy memo that limited ICE and Customs and Border Protection (both DHS agencies) from conducting raids and arrests at sensitive areas including schools, hospitals, places of worship, and demonstrations. With the rescission of the memo, students, immigrants, and children will all be put at risk of harm in the course of raids and arrests conducted in these sensitive locations, reducing everyone’s safety and security. 

Immigrants are the backbone of our country. They are workers and valued members of our communities, not criminals. It is a racist lie to say that immigrants are committing a wave of violent crimes. In fact, immigrants are far less likely to commit crimes than U.S. citizens. Hateful language labeling immigrants as criminals, aliens, or lazy is demoralizing and dehumanizing. Immigrants are essential workers, pay taxes towards Social Security, and help hold our neighborhoods together. Many or most never receive the benefits of these programs due to their citizenship status. This is despite being crucial to the existence of these programs, while billionaires cut corners to make more money. We will not allow immigrants to be used as a scapegoat and demand the protection and safety of our students. 

Deportations rip families apart and devastate communities. ICE is carrying out massive, violent invasions of neighborhoods across the country hunting down our family members, friends, and co-workers. Parents and children feel significant stress caused by the trauma of separation. Parents struggle to support their kids, often having to support themselves, leading to more stress and trauma. We reject this negative impact on our families, schools and communities.

According to the Union County Board of Education, “our goal is to provide high-quality instruction each day and provide a safe learning environment for all students”. At this time, many students do not feel safe because they’re missing school due to rumors of raids, or because they’re too distracted by fear to concentrate, regardless of immigration status. The school board has a duty to assuage this fear and protect our students.

We demand that the Union County Board of Education issue a statement in defense of the students against ICE. Students deserve the right to education and safety at school.

Los inmigrantes son un pilar fundamental de nuestro país. Son trabajadores y miembros importantes de nuestras comunidades, no delincuentes. Es una mentira racista decir que los inmigrantes están cometiendo una ola de delitos violentos. De hecho, los inmigrantes tienen mucho menos tendencias de cometer delitos que los ciudadanos. Las palabras de odio que etiquetan a los inmigrantes como delincuentes o vagos es desmoralizante y deshumanizante. Los inmigrantes son trabajadores esenciales, pagan impuestos para la Seguridad Social y ayudan a mantener la unidad de nuestros vecindarios. Muchos, o la mayoría, nunca reciben los beneficios de estos programas debido a estatus. Esto ocurre a pesar de ser clave para la existencia de estos programas, mientras que los multimillonarios recortan gastos para ganar más dinero. No permitiremos que los inmigrantes sean utilizados para dividir y exigimos la protección y seguridad de nuestros estudiantes.

Las deportaciones rompen familias y devastan comunidades. ICE está llevando a cabo invasiones masivas y violentas en vecindarios de todo el país, buscando a nuestros familiares, amigos y compañeros de trabajo. Padres e hijos sienten un alto estrés debido al trauma de la separación. A los padres les cuesta mantener a sus hijos, y a sí mismos, lo que les genera más estrés y trauma. Rechazamos este abuso en nuestras familias, escuelas y comunidades.

Según la Junta de Educación del Condado de Union, “nuestro objetivo es brindar apredizaje de alta calidad a diario y un ambiente seguro para todos los estudiantes”. En este momento, muchos estudiantes no se sienten seguros porque faltan a la escuela por rumores de redadas o porque el miedo los distrae en sus estudios. La junta escolar tiene el deber de aclarar este miedo y proteger a nuestros estudiantes.

Exigimos que la Junta de Educación del Condado de Union entregue una declaración en defensa de los estudiantes contra ICE. Los estudiantes merecen el derecho a la educación y la seguridad en la escuela.
