CONTINUE THE STRUGGLE TO STOP DEEP-SEA DRILLING

MEANWHILE, INSURE ALL OCEAN DRILLING  DONE IS WITH THE LEAST RISK TO OUR PLANET.

Make the wells 95% safer by requiring 'preemptive relief wells' while we continue the struggle to shut them all down. That doesn't insure against spills, but it does prevent them from turning into catastrophes.

Preemptive Relief Wells (relief wells in place before the main well is struck) are the only reasonable safety assurance for deep-sea drilling short of banning the practice all-together. In addition, we need to retrofit all existing ocean wells with backup relief wells before the next "accident".

BP AND CONGRESS HAVE IGNORED THIS BEST SAFETY DEVICE FOR OFF-SHORE DRILLING. THE GULF DISASTER WOULD HAVE JUST BEEN A BAD ACCIDENT IF THERE HADN'T BEEN THE MONTHS LONG DELAY WAITING FOR RELIEF WELLS TO BE DRILLED BEFORE THE LEAK COULD BE PLUGGED.

Admiral Thad Allen, USCG Commadant in charge of the Gulf cleanup, suggested pre-emptive relief wells drilled before any main well is struck offer the only real way to insure safety in an ocean drilling operation. Admiral Allen suggested one pre-emptive relief well be drilled per platform for this substantial gain in protecting our planet: Adm. Allen's suggestion has been completely ignored, by the regulators, the industry and the U.S. government.

We are suggesting two preemptive relief wells be required on every deep-sea well before any final drilling permit be issued.

BP GETTING SET TO DRILL AGAIN - 6 NEW WELLS PLANNED FOR GULF.  NEW SAFETY REGULATIONS ARE ABOUT AS REASSURING AS THE ONES IN PLACE BEFORE THE GULF SPILL.  CAN WE AFFORD ANOTHER SPILL, OR TWO OR THREE?

COSTS/RISKS:    An average deep-sea platform costs roughly beteen $500 million and $800 million to build.  Preemptive relief wells cost about $1 million to install. Yet the U.S. Government and the oil industry do not seem to feel that protecting our planet is worth the relatively miniscule added cost of installing a couple of additional relief wells before risking our oceans to another Gull spill or worse.  PLEASE SIGN AND PROPOGATE THIS PETITION.

NO OCEAN DRILLING IS THE SAFEST WAY TO GO.

UNTIL WE GET THAT, THEN RELIEF WELLS ARE OUR BEST ASSURANCE

I just signed the following petition addressed to: EPA, DOE, House Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, President Obama and the Congress.

----------------
Require two pre-emptive relief wells for any deep-sea drilling operation. Retrofit all existing wells with at least one relief well, and preferably two.

As Admiral Thad Allen has suggested, pre-emptive relief wells drilled before any main well is struck is the only known way to insure safety in an ocean drilling operation.
